The Mermaid’ Breaks Box-Office Records in China

China anointed a new box-office champion over the weekend after the fantasy romantic comedy “The Mermaid” took in $140 million during its second week in theaters, bringing its total earnings to $418 million.

By Wednesday afternoon, that figure had risen to $441 million since the film’s release at the beginning of the Chinese New Year holiday on Feb. 8, according to ChinaBoxOffice. The previous record, of $381 million, was set by the Chinese family film “Monster Hunt.”

Despite a rather low-profile North American release by Sony Pictures over the weekend, “The Mermaid” registered a relatively strong performance by a Chinese movie stateside as well, pulling in just over $1 million on 35 screens, according to Box Office Mojo.
